Baptists are Christians who believe that baptism is an act that happens only after someone has publicly professed that Christ is their Savior, and it must be through complete immersion in water. Many Baptist churches have baptismal fonts located near the front of the church. If you are looking for a church home, St. John Baptist Church wants you to know that you are welcome here. Located in Columbia, we are always looking for ways to help young families, families who are new to the area, or families who are seeking spiritual guidance. Come worship with us this Sunday!
There is only one living and true God who reveals Himself to us as the eternal, triune God — The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. God has existed before time began and is the Creator of our planet and everything in our solar system. In fact, He is the Creator of all human life and every good thing that we enjoy.
The Baptist church believes that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, and that the Bible is the divinely inspired word of God. Belief in Jesus assures us of salvation and eternal fellowship with Him in Heaven. He was born of the Virgin Mary and died on the cross for our sins. He was buried and three days later, He rose from the grave.
Baptists believe that the Bible is the only authority for Christian daily living. The Bible is divinely inspired by God and is therefore infallible and perfect, even though the men who wrote the books of the Bible were human, and therefore, fallible. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit empowered these men to record the truth about God and because of His empowerment, we can trust that it is true.
The Bible teaches that when God created Adam and Eve, they were the pinnacle of His creation. He made us in His image and called us His special creation. God also gave humans free will, and that is how sin entered the world. Despite these choices, God still loved us so much that He was willing to die for us so that we would not be eternally separated from Him.
Sin is any choice that we make, or thought that we think, that is in direct opposition to God’s laws for our lives. Because we are fallible, we sin many times each day. In His perfection, God cannot be in the presence of sin, which is why a great sacrifice was needed to cover our sins. The sacrifice that Jesus made for each of us by dying on the cross, means that we can repent of our sin, ask God for forgiveness, and move forward with our “slate” wiped clean.
